History of Alloy Wheels

In the strictest sense, there have been many kinds of alloy wheels throughout time. The modern light alloys, however, only came into automobile production in the middle of the 1900s. The first ones contained magnesium while aluminium alloys came along in the late 60s. These were popular among car enthusiasts but not so much with the general public. Part of the problem was their very high cost. Thanks to manufacturing improvements, their quality went up and the cost went down. Aluminium also became the preferred option for high-performance wheels with its much lower cost.


Lower Weight: Vehicles are heavy because of all the parts within them. If those individual parts can be made lighter, then the ride quality and performance can improve. For example, fuel consumption has a direct correlation with the weight of the vehicle. Since wheels are easily replaceable, it makes sense to get something that is light yet strong. These alloy wheels can also lessen unsprung mass which can then enhance handling. The suspension will be better able to follow the terrain closely compared to common steel wheels. 

Better Heat Conduction: The heat conduction will also improve with the use of these light alloys containing magnesium or aluminium. This means that they will be able to dissipate the heat that is coming from the brakes. This is great for those who are always driving in challenging conditions. The braking performance will be more reliable. There will be a lower risk of brake failure from overheating which can be quite dangerous. Motorists will be just a little bit safer on the roads. 

Corrosion Resistance: Alloy wheels simply look better than the rest. The best ones are resistant to corrosion so they will continue to look great even when exposed to rain, snow, and mud for long periods. Bare metal finishes can also be used but they require a sealant for protection. Cheaper alloys may get corroded after a few years, but alloy wheel refurbishment can quickly make them seem brand new again.

Most cars do not come out of the factory with light alloy wheels, although this can change as the cost continues to drop.
